Over the past six months, ProResults Drug and DNA Testing has experienced a significant increase in inquiries about testing for three emerging substances: Psilocin (the active compound in psychedelic mushrooms), Mescaline (found in peyote and other cacti), and Kratom. As these substances gain popularity and legal attention, understanding testing capabilities has become increasingly important for families, employers, and legal professionals.

What Are These Substances?

Psilocin

Psilocin is the primary psychoactive metabolite of Psilocybin, the hallucinogenic compound found in "magic mushrooms." Since 2019, Psilocybin use has grown exponentially, largely due to its availability in edible forms like chocolates and gummies. These products are often packaged to look like regular candy, making them particularly concerning for parents and educators.

Legal Status: Psilocybin remains a Schedule I controlled substance under federal law and Texas state law, despite some jurisdictions exploring decriminalization or therapeutic use.

Mescaline

Mescaline is the primary hallucinogenic compound found in peyote cactus (Lophophora williamsii) and certain other cacti species including San Pedro and Peruvian Torch. It has been used for thousands of years in Native American religious ceremonies and is protected for such use under the American Indian Religious Freedom Act for members of the Native American Church.

Legal Status: Mescaline remains a Schedule I controlled substance for the general population under federal and Texas law. While religious exemptions exist for specific Native American Church members, possession and use are illegal for the general public. Some cities have enacted low-priority enforcement policies, but these do not change the legal status of the substance.

Kratom

Kratom is a plant-based substance with both stimulant and sedative properties depending on dosage. It has been increasingly marketed as a "clean energy" or "mood-lifting" product in health drinks, often found in convenience stores and gas stations across the United States.

Why It Matters: Many consumers don't fully understand Kratom's effects or even realize they're consuming it. This creates situations of unintentional exposure that can have serious implications in custody cases, probation monitoring, and workplace safety scenarios.

Legal Status: Kratom is not currently federally controlled, though some states and localities have banned or regulated it. In Texas, Kratom remains legal for adults but faces ongoing regulatory scrutiny.

Testing Availability

ProResults Drug and DNA Testing now offers comprehensive testing for all three substances through multiple methods:

Testing Methods Available:

  • Urine Analysis: Most common method, provides detection for recent use

  • Hair Follicle Testing: Longer detection window (up to 90 days)

  • Nail Testing: Alternative to hair analysis, similar detection timeframe

Testing Options:

  • Standalone tests for individual substances

  • Integration into multi-panel drug screens

  • Customizable panels based on specific needs

Who Needs This Testing?

Families

Parents concerned about substance use can benefit from these testing capabilities, particularly with Psilocin-containing edibles that look like regular candy.

Legal Professionals

Attorneys handling family law, criminal defense, employment law, and personal injury cases now have access to testing for substances that may be relevant to:

  • Custody evaluations and parental fitness assessments

  • Probation compliance monitoring

  • Pre-trial release conditions

  • Workplace safety and impairment matters

Employers

Organizations with drug-free workplace policies or safety-sensitive positions may want to consider expanded testing panels that include these emerging substances.

Probation & Treatment Programs

Programs monitoring compliance can now test for substances that have become increasingly common but weren't previously detectable through standard panels.

Why Testing Matters

The landscape of substance use is constantly evolving. What was rare or unknown five years ago may now be readily available at local stores or marketed online as legal alternatives. Comprehensive testing helps:

  • Identify substance use that standard panels might miss

  • Protect children in custody and welfare cases

  • Ensure compliance with court orders and probation terms

  • Maintain workplace safety by detecting impairment risks

  • Support treatment by providing complete information about substance use patterns

Understanding Results

Detection windows vary based on several factors:

  • Frequency of use: Occasional vs. regular use

  • Dosage and potency: Amount consumed

  • Individual metabolism: Body composition and metabolic rate

  • Testing method: Urine vs. hair vs. nail analysis

Our team can help interpret results and explain what they mean for your specific situation.
